Cold Chain
Solar Vegetable Storage System
Cooled storage and carts that keep vegetables fresh for longer without grid power.
What is it?
A solar-powered storage chamber, and in some designs a mobile cart, that holds harvested vegetables in a cool humid environment to slow spoilage before sale.
What problem does it solve?
- Produce spoils within a day or two of harvest
- Distress selling at whatever price is offered
- No cool storage near the field or market
Who is it for?
- Vegetable growers
- Market vendors and aggregators
- Farmer producer organisations
How does it work?
The unit cools and humidifies a sealed chamber, slowing respiration and moisture loss; a solar-powered version can also be moved to where the harvest is.
Benefits
- Shelf life extended by several days
- Lets growers sell into better markets
- Reduces the volume thrown away
Limitations and trade-offs
- Not a substitute for deep refrigeration
- Loading and door discipline affect performance
- Capacity is deliberately small
